Filoli Gardens, located in Woodside, California, is a historic estate renowned for its stunning gardens and elegant mansion. Built in the early 20th century, Filoli is one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century, offering visitors a glimpse into a bygone era of opulence.
The gardens at Filoli span 16 acres and are meticulously maintained, featuring a diverse array of plant species, formal garden designs, and seasonal displays. Visitors can explore the beautifully manicured formal gardens, which include a sunken garden, rose garden, and walled garden. Each area is designed with precision and artistic flair, showcasing a harmonious blend of color, texture, and form. Depending on the time of day, the light can be absolutely magical as well.
Nobody just “takes a stroll through the gardens” anymore. That’s only something we see in Downton Abbey – truly the “bygone era”. But for a modest admission fee, you can get that feeling. I love the Filoli surprise proposal, because there’s this beautiful element of the unknown. One moment, you’re just meandering through the garden maze, and the next thing you know, someone is asking you to spend the rest of your life with them.
Capturing a Filoli surprise proposal is challenging, because the photographer needs to be mobile and resourceful. A combination of lenses, quick reflexes, and the ability to stay unobtrusive and out of the way of other patrons. But if you hire the right person (me!), the results can be spectacular.
p.s. Fioli is a terrific place for family sessions, too.
